A Co Meath farmer has taken to the high seas as part of the Solo Offshore Racing: La Solitaire du Figaro, world championships.

Tom Dolan: 'The Flying Irishman', is a week into his effort and has already made a crucial strategic decision to take a more westerly route because of wind speed.

The Meath man is sailing the Smurfit-Kappa-Kingspan and is in strong contention to win.

Meanwhile, the 33-strong fleet, comprising professional and amateur sailors, left the mouth of the Loire estuary on Sunday morning for the first stage of the race.

It covers a distance of 559 nautical miles and has been described as the Formula 1 of offshore racing.
