A Monaghan Councillor says there should be an equal sharing of Direct Provision responsibilities after news that planning is underway for a new centre in the county.

Independent Councillor Paudge Connolly says several counties of a similar population to Monaghan, including Carlow, Roscommon, and Cavan, are not providing any direct provision places.

He says Monaghan is "punching above its weight" and that this is putting pressure on GP services and school places.

Councillor Connolly told Shannonside Northern Sound that he understands the Department is looking to acquire further direct provision sites in Monaghan.

He has accused the Department of a lack of transparency when locating direct provision sites:
