Mark Clifford warned of an "unprecedented" delay in processing new applications.

New passport applications are taking up to 40 working days to process.

That's according to Mark Clifford, who is the managing director of O'Hanrahan Travel in Monaghan.

While he noted that there is a turnaround of five working days for passport renewals, he warned of an "unprecedented" delay in processing new applications.

Mr Clifford says the delay is caused by a backlog arising from the pandemic.

He added that Brexit is also a factor, as 80% of new passport applications are coming from outside the state.
