New average speed cameras will come into operation today in two locations on the N2 in Co Meath. Vehicles that are detected driving in excess of the 100 kilometre an hour speed limit will be subject to prosecution from midday.

The camera system has been installed between Collen and Ballymagarvey as part of the planned introduction of average speed cameras and static speed safety cameras across the country.

Anyone found to be driving in excess of the limit will be issued with a Fixed Charge Notice, which carries three penalty points and includes a €160 fine. This fine increases to €240 if it is not paid within 28 days.

The new system is the same as the Motorway Average Speed Safety Camera system which was put in place on the M7 in Tipperary between Junction 26 and Junction 27, in April 2022, and one installed in the Dublin Port Tunnel in 2017.
