People are being asked not to visit poultry farms in Cavan and Monaghan this Christmas.
Andy Boylan, chairman of IFA’s national poultry committee, made the calls during this week’s farmer protest outside supermarkets in Cavan, after five cases of bird flu have been detected in the region since the middle of November.
Mr Boylan said poultry farmers were ‘terrified’ of what lay ahead.
Biosecurity measures were key, he added, and IFA did not want anyone visiting farms ‘at the present time’.
