A number of motorists were detected driving under the influence of drink or drugs during checks carried out locally over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Yesterday, Cavan Roads Policing Unit stopped a driver who failed a roadside breath test for alcohol.

On Saturday evening, Cavan gardaí arrested a driver on the N3 after testing positive for both cocaine and cannabis.

And on Friday, gardaí in Carrickmacross detected a motorist on the N2 driving at 121kmph while towing a trailer -the legal speed limit while towing a trailer is 80kmph.

Meanwhile, a motorist stopped by Bailieborough Gardaí was detected driving with no tax, insurance, or NCT.

Local gardaí have urged motorists to think of the dangers of drink or drug driving and the possible consequences.
