'Over 5 hour wait' for ambulances across the region

'The ambulance service isn't fit for purpose and lives will be lost'

It took 5 hours and 14 minutes for an ambulance to arrive for an emergency call to a location in Monaghan last year. This wait time for this ambulance in Monaghan represents the 15th longest wait in the country during 2022.

The longest wait in Cavan last year was 4 hour and 59 minutes for an ambulance. 155 people waited over an hour for an ambulance across Cavan and Monaghan during 2022.

88 were waiting in Monaghan and 67 were waiting for an ambulance following a 999/112 call. The HSE aims to respond to life-threatening heart and respiratory calls within 18 minutes and 59 seconds in 80 per cent of cases.

Other life-threatening emergencies should be responded to within the same timeframe in 50 per cent of cases. According to a freedom of information request by Newstalk the longest wait was almost 7 hours and 10 minutes in Waterford. A total of 233 response times were over 3 hours. Local Councillor Paudge Connolly says the ambulance service "isn't fit for purpose" and "lives will be lost."
