Permission has been granted for the replacement of the waste water treatment plant at Dromore in Cavan.

The plans by Abbott Ireland in Cootehill have been subject to appeals and observations over recent months; however, a final decision was made in March of this year.

An Bord Pleanala has granted permission for the proposed development of a replacing the existing water treatment plant with a new plant all within the existing Abbott Ireland, Cootehill facility.

The plans include the installation of a concrete slab and associated tanks and equipment, a one storey cavity block building, filtration equipment, and a lab.

The application has been granted with 5 conditions following an appeal from a third party.

John Morehart of Bellamont House lodged an appeal outlining a number of concerns including the proposed location of the new plant, a lack of or inadequate drawings of the plans, and issues with the abstraction of water from Dromore Lough among others issues.

One Mr.Morehart's key points was that water was to be extracted from lands that he owned with his appeal stating the development would involve a "major abstraction of water from lands which is owned by and under the control of John Morehart" - something which "requires the consent of the owner of the lands in such circumstances".

There was also an observation from An Taisce which stated concerns over the impacts the development could have on Lough Oughter, water quality, and biodiversity.

However, permission has now been given with An Bord Pleanala stating the development was not directly connected to the European Site and wouldn't impact conservation objectives, and posed no negative impact on public health or property in the area.

Abbott may now progress provided the development is carried out in accordance with the plans in the application, appropriate drainage arrangements are made, and they provide information of construction hours and noise management measures.

They are also required to provide information on the disposal of waste off-site and preserve anything of archaeological importance found on the site.
