Cllr Carthy has called for a meeting to convey the concerns of the people of Carrickmacross.

A local councillor has criticised the government's proposal to accommodate asylum seekers at a former pub on the Main Street of Carrickmacross. Cllr Colm Carthy says that he has called for an emergency meeting of the Municipal District Council with Minister Roderic O’Gorman and his officials. He said the meeting would be an opportunity to convey the concerns of the people of Carrickmacross.

It was also confirmed that local TD, Matt Carthy, has written directly to Minister O’Gorman conveying his own dissatisfaction with the government proposal and seeking clarification on a number of important points. On Monday evening local elected representatives received an email from Roderic O’Gorman’s department stating that number 50 Main Street, Carrickmacross has been earmarked for International Protection accommodation. Cllr Carthy said this is a commercial building in the centre of the town with no ancillary facilities meaning that those accommodated will have nothing to do other than hang around the main street.
