Dark Skies locations safeguard the night sky for wildlife and everyone to enjoy.

Plans are being put in place to have the Cuilcagh Lakelands Geopark designated a Dark Skies Park. Also referred to locally as Cuilcagh, the geopark is Ireland's only cross-border mountain top spanning Fermanagh and Cavan.

Designated Dark Skies locations safeguard the night sky for wildlife, protecting them from light pollution. A dark sky location exposes and protests the natural wonder of the night sky for all to enjoy.

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council have outlined in a report its plans to formally submit an application to now make the UNESCO geopark a dark skies park also. The Fermanagh council's report also suggests a similar application could be made for the Sliabh Beagh area in Monaghan. There are 201 certified dark skies locations in the world, three of which are in Ireland.
