A 35-year-old Polish man has been handed a life sentence for murdering his mother at her home in Co Louth on January 8th 2019.

Tomasz Piotrowski, of Cherrybrook, Ardee, Co Louth, was initially deemed unfit for trial but later admitted lying to psychiatrists in the hope of getting a lesser sentence.

Tomasz Piotrowski was arrested a few hours after the decapitated body of his mother, Elzbieta Piotrowski, was found at her home in Ardee.

A number of Stanley knives were found next to where she lay.

Piotrowski was initially deemed unfit for trial. However, he later admitted to lying to a psychiatrist about his state of mind in order to get a diagnosis of schizophrenia.

After hearing differing views from two psychiatrists last week, Mr Justice Michael White decided he could stand trial for her murder.

He said he was satisfied that he could enter a plea, follow the evidence and put forward a proper defence. His mental wellbeing would be left for the jury to decide.

However, when Tomasz was arraigned ahead of his trial this morning, he pleaded guilty to murdering his 57 year old mother and was handed the mandatory life sentence.
