We may never know the reason for the high incidence rate of Covid-19 in Cavan and Monaghan.

TDs are today discussing the pandemic with representatives of the National Public Health Emergency Team.

Cavan has the highest incidence rate in the country with Monaghan having the third highest, something which goes against international trends where urban areas tend to have higher rates.

Local TD and member of the Dáil's Covid-19 committee Matt Carthy asked for clarity on why the rates are higher in the Northern Sound region.

President of Maynooth University Professor Philip Nolan said Cavan and Monaghan's proximity to Dublin could play a part in the high rates but the full reason may never be known:
