Two to five centimetres of snowfall is expected and therefore, some disruption may be inevitable.

The yellow snow warning in place for Cavan and Monaghan tonight and into tomorrow will be more like a cold snap than a cold spell. That's according to Northern Sound / Shannonside weather watcher Cathal Nolan who said the snow and ice predicted will occur here because Ireland "finds itself in the middle of a deadlock between cold air in the east and milder air in the west."

The forecaster from Ireland's Weather Channel said sleet and rain overnight and into the early hours of tomorrow morning will turn to sleet and snow as the morning progresses and into the afternoon. Two to five centimetres of snowfall is expected and therefore, some disruption may be inevitable as Cathal says during the morning school run or commute. As to the all important question of 'will it stick?' Cathal says it will before it clears in the evening.

"It certainly will in some parts,"Cathal told Northern Sound, "Initially through tomorrow morning it's likely to stick around for at least into the afternoon. It is likely that through the afternoon and into the evening the milder air will eventually move across the country so that any snow that does fall through the morning and early afternoon should start to melt away as we go into the evening and overnight period. Well, at the moment it looks like it's going to be short-lived so, we'd refer to it even as a cold snap rather than a cold spell."
