'The people in Castleblayney Community Allotments are a fantastic community of people who come together on a daily and weekly basis to grow vegetables and fruit'

Gardai in Castleblayney have launched an investigation after tunnels in the Community Gardens at Drumilard were set on fire last Friday evening.

A large gazebo was also damaged during the incident which occurred at approximately 9pm. Anyone who noticed anything suspicious in the area at the time is asked to contact Gardai on on 042 9747900.

Meanwhile, Cllr Aidan Campbell said he is horrified by what happened and he described those who engaged in the criminal activity as thugs. Cllr Campbell also paid tribute to the hard work and dedication to the cause of all those who run and organise the community garden.

"The people in Castleblayney Community Allotments are a fantastic community of people who come together on a daily and weekly basis to grow vegetables and fruit," he continued.

"And this is the thugs that come in then and light fires and burn the benches. These people deserve to be caught and if anyone knows anything about this, I would encourage them to go to the Gardai in Castleblayney and report it."
