Listen Back: Student voices must be heard in education reform says local teenager

A 14-year-old student from Cavan has recently conducted a survey to hear what second-level students have to say about the Second-Level Education System.

The survey conducted by Joe Quinn led to the creation of an independent report titled Youth Perspectives on Education in Ireland (2026)

Based on a nationwide survey of 156 students, the report highlights clear data regarding exam pressure, the demand for the full implementation of continuous assessment, and a preference for conversational Irish.

The local teenager shared these findings with local TDs and Senators to ensure student perspectives inform national policy.

One of the stand out findings were that almost 95% of all students surveyed want to see more practical subjects taught in school.

Joe says he wants to give students a voice.

Speaking with Ronan Gargan earlier today, Joe says stress was a major problem and the lack of mental health supports available to students.
