Listen Back: Vacant places in Monaghan special classes 'not transparent'. There were 49 vacant places in special classes in schools across Co Monaghan in September. NCSE recording 37 vacancies in primary schools and 12 in post-primary schools.
Cllr Bronagh McAree believes the figures published by the NCSE are trying to convey that there is more than an adequate number of school places for children with additional needs which is not the case.
Furthermore, Cllr Bronagh McAree describes the figures as "disappointing"; adding that "availability is great, but the main concern is accessibility".
Moreover, Cllr McAree also believes this report reveals a widening gap between official figures and the lived reality of families seeking appropriate education for their children.
