Vandals hit disused Cavan workhouse. Vandals have recently hit a disused workhouse in county Cavan.
The Bawnboy Workhouse has been completely vacant for over two years; after community groups told to leave following safety concerns. The recent vandalism has prompted fresh calls for building to be brought back into use.
Bawnboy local, Dymphna Headen spoke to Sorcha Burke about the situation.
When asked for response, Cavan County Council said; "Cavan County Council is exploring the possibility of securing funding under the Historic Structures Fund to stabilise the roof at Bawnboy Workhouse, however there are significant and wide-ranging structural issues in the workhouse complex, and the cost of restoring it to an acceptable standard would run into millions of euro. The safety of the public is the primary concern of Cavan County Council in this regard, and it is unsafe to open it for occupancy."
