23 new beds are opening in Monaghan Hospital to help alleviate pressure on other hospitals in the region.

The RCSI Hospitals Group says the new beds will be used for community care and will allow the Lisdarn unit in Cavan to be used for stepdown and acute care.

It says the beds will allow additional services locally for the coming winter and high demand period.

The RCSI Group also confirmed that there will also be an enhancement of staffing at the Lisdarn Care of the Elderly Unit to deliver consultant lead outreach support.

Monaghan Councillor Seamus Coyle, who's a member of the local Regional Health Forum, says he is disappointed no time frame has been given as to when the beds will be introduced but overall, the news is good for the local region.

However he has also stated that there is a need to continue to establish and reinstate services at the hospital here.

Speaking to Northern Sound he said he hopes that the local Oireachtais members will continue to highlight the need for a fully functioning hospital in Monaghan at a national level.
