Local TD commends 'people of Ireland' on Covid-19 response

Deputy Matt Carthy has paid tribute to the people of Ireland and all those who worked on the frontline during the pandemic as restrictions come to an end tonight.

Taoiseach Micheal Martin is expected to give a “clear and comprehensive” statement on the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions at 6pm this evening.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show this morning, Deputy Carthy said the public's response was to be commended as was the leadership of health officials and the Government.

The local TD also pointed to the 6,000 people who died during the pandemic and highlighted how their families would be "most reflective" today as the country emerges from "a tough few years".

“I am conscious that over 6,000 people lost their lives during Covid-19 and their families will be more reflective than the rest of us today," he continued.

"But they will be glad too that we are on the downward hill and out of what has been a very tough few years.

“Absolutely, well done to the people of Ireland and to the leadership of our public health and to our Government on the decisions it got right.

“We can reflect on the decisions that it didn't get right at a later stage.”

Meanwhile, added Deputy Carthy,  many people are still feeling the affects of Covid-19 and many people are still sick, “but today is a day that we can hope, and see light at the end of the tunnel.”
