Cavan and Monaghan county councils failed to collect money from owners of 49 derelict sites in 2023.
The Derelict Sites Register, which records the sites subject to an annual levy, shows there were nearly 2,000 derelict sites around the country at the end of 2023.
There were 31 in Monaghan and 18 in Cavan but no levies were collected. County councils are owed more than 20 million euro in unpaid derelict site levies, as nearly 2,000 sites lie vacant around the country.
New figures released to Social Democrats TD, Rory Hearne show 17 of the 31 local authorities didn't collect money owed under the Derelict Sites Levy in 2023. Deputy Hearne says it's an issue all over Ireland and Limerick is the only place to have effectively dealt with it:
