35 children and 1 adult employee died as a result of the 1943 fire.

Plans are in place to create a public memorial in Cavan Town to honour the orphanage fire victims.

The Cavan Orphanage fire happened on the 23rd of February in 1943, at St Joseph's Orphanage.

35 children and 1 adult employee died as a result.

It's hoped that a memorial can be created in time for the 80th anniversary of the tragedy, which will be next February.

Several local politicians attended a public meeting this week to discuss the next steps in creating the memorial.

Sean Galligan is part of the "Remember the Cavan Orphanage Victims Group", and told Northern Sound that he wants to involve the victims and their relatives:
